We’re thrilled to have Chiwan Choi here with us tonight. I was first introduced to Chiwan’s work about 8 years ago. My family and I had just moved into a magical, spirited yellow house with no closets in Topanga. Shortly after, a gift arrived in the mail from my sister. It was a book of Chiwan’s poems titled The Yellow House. I remember opening the book and reading one poem and then another until the light faded. I had read the entire book in one sitting. The words described all the joy and sorrow I was feeling in my life at that moment. It was beautiful. I have since taken a poetry workshop with Chiwan, which was transformative, and read a second book of his called Abductions. When he posted that he would be in LA this summer, teaching at CSSSA, I knew it was fortuitous. Both Connie and I felt a reading would add a next-level layer to FOYER-LA’s current show, IS IT SAFE. There are many parallels that we can explore tonight in the artist discussion to follow.
